Council Leads Health, Video Projects

The Health Literacy Project: With funding from Kaiser Permanente, The San Diego Council on Literacy, in partnership with the Community Health Improvement Partners, launched and completed the first phase of its Health Literacy Project. This project lays the foundation for future efforts that help literacy programs address the health needs of their students, while improving the health care community's ability to serve clients who may be adversely affected by obstacles related to low-level literacy, cultural differences or language differences.

The primary project goal is to develop a collaborative health literacy plan. The San Diego Council on Literacy and CHIP are assessing health literacy challenges through research and are identifying local literacy and health organization resources that can contribute to health literacy solutions.

The Council and its partners will seek additional support that will allow for implementation of components identified in the new plan.

The Video Game Literacy Project: Through a contribution of $30,000 from National University, The San Diego Council on Literacy, in partnership with faculty from National University, has engaged in a special research effort. This project will result in the design of a video game that will be entertaining, engaging, as well as effective in helping users to improve their literacy skills.

The National University project team has gone into full research mode, having already met with personnel from the Literacy Network. The team has visited adult education centers and adult literacy programs to learn from teachers, tutors and students.

In December 2007, The San Diego Council on Literacy and National University will unveil the demo of a video game. The demo is a first step toward developing a game that will strengthen user literacy skills through captivating and productive game play.
