Give the Gift of Literacy

The San Diego Council on Literacy and its adult, youth and family literacy programs are focused on improving the lives of San Diego County residents who have limited reading and writing skills. These countywide literacy services are provided at no charge to participants and offer the opportunity for individuals to improve their literacy skills and begin to break the cycle of illiteracy. Your donation will directly support our countywide literacy efforts and guarantee that all have access to these much-needed services.

A gift of $100 will:

  • Cover the cost of three months of literacy training for an adult learner;
  • Train 10 volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring to a low level reading adult or child;
  • Purchase 50 new books to distribute to children who want to read and have never had a new book of their own.

The council is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and receives a majority of its funding from individuals and corporate donations. We have two major fundraisers, the Union-Tribune Race for Literacy and the Chairman's Circle Reception for donors giving $1000 or more. We also receive United Way funding and foundation grants.
