LOCAL AND LOS ANGELES-BASED BANDS ‘ROCK FOR LITERACY’ AT EVENT BENEFITING LITERACY*AMERICORPS

WHAT: As a reduction in funding threatens Literacy*AmeriCorps’ ability to provide much-needed literacy services, the program hosts the Rock for Literacy concert featuring explosive performances by locally based Spoken Gun, Swim Party, Cape May and Los Angles-based Space Museum. All proceeds benefit Literacy*AmeriCorps – San Diego.

Literacy*AmeriCorps is a literacy project administered by The San Diego Council on Literacy and funded in part by the Corporation for National Community Service (CNCS). Literacy*AmeriCorps members serve for a 12-month period and complete 1,700 hours of service at literacy programs throughout the county, helping adults, families, children and ESL learners improve their lives by bettering their literacy skills.

THE BANDS: Headliner Spoken Gun blends reggae, ska, hip hop, blues, funk and rock to form an eclectic sound, while Swim Party is melody-driven and falls into the indie rock genre with male and female vocals. Cape May is a rhythm rock band — with influences such as The Doors, The Strokes, The Ramones and The Beatles — that has played venues including The Casbah, The Whisky, The Belly Up and more. Space Museum can be described as ac oustic indie rock. DJs Adam Rapp and SayWhat will also spin the latest in Hip hop and Techno during the intermission between each band’s set. WHY: Funds from CNCS have been significantly reduced, meaning The San Diego Council on Literacy is required to cover more of the costs for administering the Literacy*AmeriCorps program. Meanwhile, an estimated 450,000 adults in San Diego County are functionally illiterate, meaning they don’t have the basic skills to read a menu, food or prescription medication labels, or a job application — and the need is still growing.
