Upcoming Council Special Events

The Union-Tribune Race for Literacy and Kids Magic Mile: An estimated 7,000 walkers and runners converged on Balboa Park and scenic State Route 163 on May 5-6, 2007, for The Union-Tribune Race for Literacy and Kids Magic Mile.

With the flawless coordination that drives these events every year, The San Diego Union-Tribune, through the Race for Literacy and the Kids Magic Mile, raised literacy awareness and funds for The San Diego Council on Literacy and the Literacy Network.

The 2006 Chairman's Circle Event: In early December 2006, San Diego County's major literacy supporters gathered at the Copley Library in La Jolla for the annual Chairman's Circle reception. This celebration brings recognition to individuals, businesses and foundations for their dedication to improving literacy in our community.

The 2006 event's honorary chairman was David Copley. The formation of The San Diego Council on Literacy is part of the Copley family legacy that began with Helen K. Copley and continues through David and The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Dr. Jerry Lee, chancellor of the National University System, chaired the event. Drew Schlosberg, community and public relations manager for The San Diego Union-Tribune, presented the annual Union-Tribune Corporate Leadership Award to Dr. Robert Singer and Judith Harris. Over the years, the Singers have played a starring role in advocating for greater funding for The San Diego Council on Literacy. They also contribute tremendously to the success of each Chairman's Circle event.
